Lesson #5: Adding Textured Papers

Part of the unit: Nature Inspired Collage Compositions |

Goals

Aim:
How can adding texture enhance a collage?
Students will be able to:
Identify actual and visual textures
Add textured papers to the collage
Students will understand that:
Artists employ art elements to create visual interest.
Materials

Bins of hand-painted solid and textured papers; student collages from lesson 4; student drawings from lesson 1; magazine textures; scissors; glue sticks

Resources

Hand-painted paper made by running a fork through wet paint, corrugated board; flowers/plants

Motivation:

Display a piece of corrugated cardboard, a hand-painted paper with texture, and a magazine page that simulates a texture.

  • How are these papers similar?
  • How are they different?

Explain that although they have texture, two can be easily felt while the photo creates the illusion of texture.

  • Why do artists like to use texture in their work?

Display a student's collage from lesson 4 and the drawing that inspired it.

Explain that students will be adding details to the organic shapes in their collages.

  • What details do you see in the drawing or on the flower/plant that we can add to the collage?

Ask the student to select a textured paper that could be used to represent the detail.

Demonstration:

The student should cut out the shapes from the textured paper to use as details.  These shapes should be glued in place on the collage.

  • How does the addition of texture enhance this collage?

Students should be called by table to select textured papers for their collage.  Students may also share the magazine textures brought in for homework.

Students will cut/tear shapes and glue them in place to add detail to their collages.

Post finished student collages.

Ask students to select collages that show an interesting use of

  • color to create mood
  • texture to create visual interest

Engage students in a reflection by asking questions such as:

  • What did you enjoy the most about this collage unit?
  • What did you learn about making collages?
