Lesson #7: Assembling the Collage

Goals

Aim:
How can we assemble our collage?
Students will be able to:
Arrange collage materials into a composition
Make changes to improve the composition before gluing
Use glue sticks to attach their cut pieces on their still-life drawings
Students will understand that:
Creating a good composition requires solving design problems.
Collage allows for experimentation and change before gluing.
Materials

Envelopes with cut shapes and collage materials, tracing paper, scissors, ebony pencils, student drawings of the still-life, glue sticks

Motivation:

Today we will be assembling our collages by gluing down the cut pieces.

  • Who thinks they are ready to begin gluing?  Why do you think so?
  • What are the advantages of cutting all the shapes in your design before gluing?
  • Why might you want to make a change at this time?
  • Which pieces should you glue down first?  Why?
  • What problems might you encounter in gluing the main shapes down first? (the drawn outlines of smaller shapes get covered so you may lose the exact placement, details seen in the drawings can be lost when shapes are overlapped, objects may become less recognizable, etc.)
  • How can you solve this problem?
Demonstration:

Invite a student to demonstrate how to use stick glue to attach one large background shape.

  • What problems could you encounter if you do not apply the glue carefully?

Students will glue their cut shapes directly on their 12x16 still-life drawing.

Instruct the students to exchange their collages with a partner.  Hand out a sheet with accountable talk questions such as:

The first thing I notice about this work is.....

I like the way the artist....

Something special about this collage is......

I'd like to know........

One suggestion for improving this collage is.....

Use the back of the accountable talk sheet to write a paragraph explaining what you should do next in creating this collage.
