Lesson #7: Assessing our drawings

Part of the unit: Drawing a Figure in a Setting |

Goals

Aim:
Why should we assess our drawings?
Students will be able to:
Determine the criteria for this project.
Make changes to their drawings based on a set of criteria.
Participate in a class critique.
Students will understand that:
Artists continually evaluate and make adjustments to their work based on set criteria.
The purpose of a group critique is to make constructive suggestions for improvement and to identify successful solutions.
Materials

Student drawings and photographs, ebony or conte crayon, kneaded erasers, masking tape

Motivation:

Today will be the last day to finish our drawings.

  • Why do you think we need one more day to complete our work? (to make changes based on the self-assessment sheet from the last lesson)
  • How do you know you are finished? (you've met the criteria for the project)
  • What are the criteria for this project? (use of value to make the objects look three-dimensional, the figure should emerge from the background, there should be a feeling of space between the foreground and background, a wide variety of values should be used, value should create a mood)
Demonstration:

Askr a student to display his/her work.  Direct the class to look at the list of criteria written on the board.

  • Based on the criteria we have developed, what suggestions can you offer to help the artist completthe drawing?

Students will finish their drawings.

Post drawings at the front of the room.  During a class critique, ask students to select and discuss drawings that display:

  • the use of contrast to create drama
  • an unusual angle or perspective
  • a figure that emerges from its setting
  • the use of gradation to make objects look three-dimensional
  • deep space
  • the use of value to create mood

Write a paragrah explaining what you found the most challenging about doing this drawing and what you did to meet those challenges.

Discuss one student work you admired and explain why you chose it.
