Goals

Aim: 
Why are our six prints a limited edition?
Students will be able to:
Print the fourth and last layer
Number their work to create a limited edition
Students will understand that:
Limited editions create rarity and individuality for multiple-impression art.
Materials

Three-layer prints, printing block, four-color sketch, newspaper, newsprint, Speedball inks, trays, hard and soft brayers

Motivation: 

Explain that after today's lesson, each student will have a limited edition of six prints.

  • What is a limited edition?
  • Why do printmakers create limited editions?
  • Why can't these prints ever be made again?

 

 

Demonstration: 

Ask a student to print his/her fourth layer of color as the class watches.  Explain that the last color should contrast with the other colors and should add definition to the image. 

Ask the student to sign his/her name and print 1/6 in the appropriate place. 

  • How will you number the second print you make today?  the third?  the last?

Students will print their last layer over their three-layer prints and will number them to create a limited edition.

Share your prints with a partner.  Work together to select your best print.  Discuss the criteria for selecting it.

Write a page reflecting on the process of creating your prints.  Address the following questions:

  • Did you enjoy printmaking?  Why or why not?
  • What was difficult about this process?
  • How did you address these difficulties?
  • What should be the criteria for evaluating your prints?
  • How well did you meet the criteria?
  • Which of your prints is your favorite, and why?
  • If you could redo this project, what would you do differently?
  • In what ways are your prints similar to work by Andy Warhol?  How are they different?
